Joan is 86 and lives alone in the family home where she raised her children. After a fall in early 2023, her confidence was knocked and she began to struggle with day-to-day tasks. Determined to stay independent, Joan and her family turned to Retons Care for support. With two daily visits, she now receives gentle, consistent help with meals, medication and mobility and is thriving once again in the home she loves. Below, her son Michael shares their story.

After the Fall

Mum has always been fiercely independent. Even in her eighties, she still insisted on cooking her own meals, doing her crossword every morning and walking to the corner shop when she could. But everything changed in March 2023, when she slipped in the kitchen and fractured her hip.

The surgery went well, but the recovery was slow. Mum was nervous on her feet and kept saying, I do not want to end up in a home. That was never what she wanted. As a family, we knew she needed support not just physically, but emotionally too.

Finding the Right Fit

A friend recommended Retons Care. From the first conversation, I felt reassured. The care coordinator, Amina, came to Mum’s house to meet her in person and took time to understand not just her medical needs, but her routine, preferences and personality.

Mum was clear that she wanted help without feeling like she was being looked after. She did not want to lose her independence. Amina explained how the carers could support her with the things that were becoming difficult, while encouraging her to keep doing the things she still could. That balance was exactly what we were looking for.

Care That Feels Like Company

Joan now receives two visits a day. One in the morning to help her wash, dress and prepare breakfast, and one in the evening to check on medication, offer a light supper and help her get settled for the night.

Her two regular carers, Denise and Rachel, were carefully matched based on their gentle approach and shared interests. Denise grew up nearby and remembers the same shops Mum talks about. Rachel shares her love of gardening and even brought her a small tray of seedlings last spring.

It is not just about personal care. They chat about old TV shows, play music while making tea, and sit with her if she is feeling a little lonely. The house feels more alive again. Mum says it best — They are not just helping me, they are helping me feel like myself again.

The Difference It Has Made

Since starting with Retons Care, Mum’s confidence has grown. She moves more freely around the house, has started baking small cakes again, and even went out with me to the local café for the first time in months.

As her son, the biggest gift has been peace of mind. I live an hour away, and I used to worry constantly. Now I know someone kind and capable is checking in every day. The carers communicate clearly with me, and the support plan is regularly reviewed so we can adjust things if needed.

The truth is, Mum still lives at home because of the care she receives — and she does so with dignity, comfort and a sense of control over her life.
