Frank is 78 and lives with Parkinson’s. For the past four years, his wife Sheila has been his full time carer. In early 2024, after a particularly tough winter, Sheila was exhausted. She knew she needed a break, but felt torn about stepping away. After speaking with the team at Retons Care, she arranged a two week respite package to give herself time to rest and recharge. The experience not only gave Sheila breathing space, it gave Frank warm and reliable care in the comfort of his own home. Below, Sheila shares how respite care helped them both.

Caring for the Person You Love Most

When Frank was first diagnosed with Parkinson’s, it felt like something we could manage together. But as the condition progressed, things became harder. He started needing help with dressing, eating, medication and getting around the house. Slowly, I became his carer as well as his wife.
I love him deeply, but it has been hard. By the end of 2023, I was exhausted. I was barely sleeping, worried all the time, and starting to feel like I had lost my own identity. People would say, you need a break, but I felt guilty even thinking about it.
It was our daughter who found Retons Care. She said, Mum, you cannot pour from an empty cup.
Taking the First Step

I called Retons Care and spoke to a care coordinator named Lorraine. She was so kind. She did not rush me or make me feel like I was being selfish. She said something I will never forget, “caring for someone does not mean you have to do it alone”.
We talked through what Frank needed, from personal care and mobility support to help with meals and medication. Lorraine explained how live in respite care could work for us — a two week package where a trained care worker would stay in the house around the clock while I went on holiday.
I still felt nervous, but I agreed. We booked it for January 2024.

Around the Clock Care, at Home

When Cheryl, Frank’s care worker, arrived the day before I left, she came early to settle in and get to know the routine. She sat with Frank, listened to how he liked things done, and made sure he felt involved.
Over the next two weeks, Cheryl stayed with Frank day and night. She supported him with washing, dressing, preparing meals and managing his medication. She kept the house calm and comfortable, just how Frank likes it.
They watched old black-and-white films together, talked about football, and played cards in the evening. I rang most days, and every time I did, Frank sounded like himself. He told me, I feel like I have a bit of company, not just someone looking after me.
A Much-Needed Break

I went away with a friend for the first time in years. We stayed by the coast, walked along the seafront, and I slept through the night without listening out for movement upstairs. I felt lighter than I had in a long time.
Most importantly, I knew Frank was not just being looked after — he was being cared for. With warmth, consistency and dignity.
“Being trusted to care for someone in their own home is always a privilege. Frank welcomed me with kindness, and we built a little routine of our own. I am so glad Sheila could take the time she deserved.”
